Dear Practitioners of Tea Ceremony and Japanese Culture,
and everyone connected with Wa no Gakkou at Tozenji,
Happy New Year.
I hope you are all doing well, and I sincerely appreciate your continued support.
This year marks the 15th year since Wa no Gakkou was established at Tozenji Temple in Coquitlam. Over the years, we have had the privilege of sharing many activities rooted in Japanese culture with numerous families.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to our knowledgeable instructors, our dedicated volunteers, and everyone who has a connection with Tozenji Temple.
From the very beginning, our goal has been to share the beauty and values of Japanese culture with children, and we will continue to cherish and uphold this mission in the years to come.
As our first event of the year, we are pleased to announce a Kids Tea Ceremony entitled
“Jinjitsu no Sekku – In Preparation for Setsubun.”
If you have friends or students who may be interested, we would be grateful if you could share this information and encourage them to participate.
Please find the event details below.
Thank you very much for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Tomoko Kona

**人日(じんじつ)について**
人日は五節句の一つで、1月7日にあたります。

Jinjitsu (January 7) is one of the Five Seasonal Festivals in Japan. This day, also known as Nanuka-shōgatsu (the seventh day of the New Year), is commonly called the Festival of Seven Herbs, as people traditionally eat nanakusa-gayu (seven-herb rice porridge).
In ancient China, the first seven days of the New Year were each assigned an animal:
the 1st day was the Day of the Rooster, the 2nd the Day of the Dog, the 3rd the Day of the Pig, the 4th the Day of the Sheep, the 5th the Day of the Cow, and the 6th the Day
of the Horse. On each of these days, it was customary to refrain from killing the animal associated with that day.

Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event that marks the change of seasons, and is especially observed on the day
before Risshun, the beginning of spring.
During Setsubun, people throw roasted soybeans while chanting “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (“Demons out, good fortune in”) to drive
away evil spirits and pray for good health and happiness.
Originally, Setsubun referred to the day before each seasonal transition—before Risshun (spring), Rikka (summer), Risshū (autumn), and Rittō (winter). However, because spring was traditionally considered the start of the new year, the Setsubun before spring became the most important. As a result, customs such as bean-throwing and eating Ehomaki became widely established.
